Power industry overhead linesperson apprenticeship

Maintain and repair plant and equipment associated with power distribution or transmission overhead lines.

As an overhead linesperson apprentice in the power industry, you’ll be crucial in maintaining existing power distribution and transmission networks. Whether you specialise in distribution or transmission, you’ll conduct planned and reactive maintenance and repairs. You’ll often work near live apparatus, so knowledge of safety protocols is important! Your role as a power industry overhead linesperson apprentice may involve constructing line plant and apparatus, such as wooden poles. You might also need to interact with customers and the public to update them on work progress. Ultimately, your work will contribute to the safe supply of electricity and the development of sustainable networks for the future. You may be required to hold a driving license, and work in all weather conditions. You may need to hold CSCS (construction skills certification scheme card) card. 

 

Duration: 30 months 

Relevant school subjects: Engineering, Science 

Entry requirements for the power industry distribution cable jointer apprenticeship: Varies by employer, but typically GCSE Grade 4 (C) or above or an equivalent qualification in mathematics, engineering, or physics. 

Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to A-levels 

Potential salary upon completion: £32,000
