
Command commercial vessels and take responsibility for the safety of crew, cargo, and environment
As a ship’s master apprentice, you’ll learn how to take full command of a commercial ship, leading all onboard operations and ensuring safe navigation. You’ll be responsible for the crew’s welfare, compliance with international maritime laws, and effective communication with ports and coastal authorities.
During your apprenticeship, you’ll gain expertise in ship handling, navigation, meteorology, emergency procedures, cargo operations, and crew management. You’ll also learn about environmental protection, maritime legislation, and onboard safety systems, working in both routine and high-pressure situations.
You’ll need excellent leadership skills, decision-making ability, and a strong sense of responsibility. The role requires confidence, resilience, and clear communication, especially during emergencies or complex port operations.
With experience, you could move into senior shore-based roles such as fleet management, harbour operations, or maritime training and regulation.
Duration: 48 months
Relevant school subjects: Geography, physics, maths
Entry requirements: Level 2 English and maths; must meet medical and eyesight standards set by maritime authorities; employers may have additional requirements
Achievement upon completion: Level 6 (Degree) – equivalent to a full bachelor’s degree
Potential salary upon completion: £45,000–£70,000 per annum
