Install or maintain and repair stairlifts, lifting platforms or service lifts

A stairlift is a mechanism used for transporting less able persons up and down stairways. A lifting platform is a mechanism to raise a wheelchair and its occupant to overcome a step or similar vertical barrier. A service lift is a mechanism used for transporting small goods from one floor to another. As an electromechanic specialising in any of these types of lifts, you’ll work in various environments, including domestic, retail and industrial buildings above and below ground. During the stairlift, lifting platform and service lift electromechanic apprenticeship you’ll carry out the installation or maintenance and repair of stairlifts, lifting platforms or service lifts, depending on your chosen specialism. You’ll ensure that the lift is in line with the applicable codes and standards, both historical and current. You’ll also ensure the lift is safe for use and free from defects. The skills that you’ll employ when conducting the work are of a complex nature and draw on knowledge and experience of a wide range of equipment.

Duration: 24 months

Relevant school subjects: Science and DT

Entry requirements for the stairlift, lifting platform and service lift electromechanic apprenticeship: Two GCSEs or level 2 equivalent in English and a science, technology, engineering and mathematics subject

Achievement upon completion: Level 2 (Intermediate) – equivalent to GCSEs

Potential salary upon completion: £27,000
