Steeplejack apprenticeship

Work at height to inspect, repair and maintain tall structures

As a steeplejack apprentice, you’ll learn how to carry out specialist work at height on tall buildings and structures such as church steeples, chimneys, towers, high-rise flats, bridges, and industrial buildings. Your job will involve using ropes, ladders, scaffolding or mobile platforms to access difficult-to-reach places.

During your apprenticeship, you’ll be trained to inspect and repair structures, carry out repointing, painting, sealing, welding, and install lightning protection systems. Safety is vital in this role, and you’ll be taught how to follow strict procedures, use protective equipment, and carry out risk assessments.

You’ll need to be physically fit, have a good head for heights, and enjoy working outdoors in all weathers. You’ll also need to be a team player, following clear instructions and working closely with others to complete jobs safely and efficiently.

With experience, you could move into supervisory roles, specialise in areas like rope access or restoration, or even start your own steeplejack business.
