Help ensure safe, fair and legal marketplaces
The broad purpose of this occupation is to help ensure safe, fair and legal marketplaces, helping businesses succeed and protecting communities. As a trading standards professional, you’ll do this by safeguarding buyers of goods and services, and the public, against unfair practices in the marketplace. Examples include where an organisation advertises that their goods and services are environmentally friendly, but they are not, or if they are selling a product that is unsafe. You’ll typically work in organisations where goods and services are designed, produced, stored, distributed, promoted, and sold and could work in either the public or private sector. Your day to day duties will include investigating issues and complaints, undertaking reviews or audits, to determine appropriate outcomes and regulatory actions to be implemented. You’ll advise businesses to prevent them from engaging in fraudulent and unfair practices to maintain fair and safe trading environments. You’ll need excellent communication skills and the ability to make judgements and take responsibility for your own work.
