Vet technician (livestock) apprenticeship

Carry out common husbandry and technical tasks for livestock

As a vet technician your main interest is to promote the health and welfare of livestock or in the breeding of livestock. Tasks can include vaccinations, mobility assessment, foot trimming, disbudding, growth monitoring, recording data, preparing livestock for surgery and assisting veterinary surgeons. While you will not be required to give advice or carry out treatment, during the vet technician apprenticeship you’ll typically collect data on certain health conditions and then help deliver health plans and protocols to prevent future health issues and diseases from occuring. You’ll report directly to the vet as you will be onsite with the livestock more regularly, and you’ll need to maintain professional working relationships with your clients. You may be required to work unsociable hours, and due to the nature of the role you’ll need to be in good physical health.

Duration: 24 months

Relevant school subjects: Science

Entry requirements for the vet technician (livestock) apprenticeship: Depend on employer, but likely A-levels or equivalent qualifications or experience. You are likely to have some husbandry skills and livestock knowledge and may have worked in a vet practice at a junior level.

Achievement upon completion: Level 5 (Higher)—equivalent to a foundation degree

Potential salary upon completion: £23,000
