VFX artist or technical director apprenticeship

Create content, by producing objects, images or scenes that render together with live footage for the final image

As a VFX artist you’ll provide digital content for film, television, advertising, games, corporate and immersive reality industries. Visual effects (VFX) is the term used to describe any imagery created, altered, or enhanced for moving media. Live-action footage and computer generated imagery integrate to create images that look realistic but would be dangerous, costly or impossible to capture live. A VFX artist is a combination of an artist and a programmer, responsible for the more technical aspects of production. You’ll need a high level of STEM skills, good computer literacy and coding skills. During the VFX artist or technical director apprenticeship you will interact with the production team and must be able to take direction and feedback. Work may include out of hours or irregular working patterns. You have four options to choose from along with the core apprenticeship, these include VFX simulation; VFX rigging, VFX lighting and VFX environments.

Duration: 18 months

Relevant school subjects: Art, ICT, science

Entry requirements for the VFX artist or technical director apprenticeship: Depend on employer, but likely A-levels or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience

Achievement upon completion: Level 6 (Higher)—equivalent to a bachelor’s degree

Potential salary upon completion: £28,000 per annum
