Leeds College of Building apprentices wow at national competition

Leeds College of Building is celebrating a massive achievement after four of its students secured top positions in the national SkillBuild 2024 competition.

Known as the UK’s largest multi-trade skills contest for construction trainees and apprentices, SkillBuild is an event that highlights the incredible talent within the construction industry. This year, the competition was organised by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and featured ten different trade categories.

The national final, held at Milton Keynes Marshall Arena, drew more than 1,500 visitors, showcasing the exciting career paths available in construction.

Leeds College of Building apprentice winners

Among the winners were Leeds College of Building apprentices who impressed the judges: Holly Taylor Whitehead took first place in the Wall & Floor Tiling category, making history as both the first Leeds College of Building winner and the first female student in this category. Ben Gordon achieved third place in Wall & Floor Tiling, further demonstrating the College’s high standard of training. Alfie Waddington took second place in Roof Slating & Tiling, praised by judges for his precision in a close-fought competition. Wesley Proud secured third place in Plastering, showcasing incredible determination under intense time pressure.

Not only did Holly Taylor Whitehead take home SkillBuild gold, but she was also awarded Wall & Floor Tiling Apprentice of the Year at the Leeds College of Building BIG Awards. Her lecturer commented, “As the only female Wall & Floor tiling apprentice, I’m sure Holly is an inspiration to all women who are considering a career in construction and the built environment. She’s a fantastic young professional and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for her.”

What does the SkillBuild competition involve?

SkillBuild competitors worked under intense conditions, completing projects designed by experts within 18 hours over three days. These tasks tested their technical skills, time management, and ability to perform under pressure.

The judges were highly impressed, with NFRC Vice President Andy Rowlands stating that the Roof Slating & Tiling final was one of the closest competitions he’d ever seen.

“SkillBuild is a fantastic opportunity for students to really showcase their skills, push them to the limit, and represent our amazing college on a national stage,” commented Mark Sims, Leeds College of Building’s SkillBuild coordinator.

Construction is a key area of growth in the near future

With the construction industry expecting to need over 250,000 new workers by 2028, competitions like SkillBuild are vital. They showcase the variety of roles available in construction while helping to attract the next generation of skilled workers.

Richard Bullock, Head of Careers Products at CITB, said, “Each year I look forward to SkillBuild and this year definitely did not disappoint.

“Now more than ever before is a critical time for skills development in construction, and SkillBuild has the power to turn interests and hobbies into rewarding careers. The past few days have been great. It’s been excellent getting to meet talented individuals and learn about their passion for their chosen trade.”
