Marine engineer

Design and oversee testing, installation, and repair of marine apparatus and equipment

A marine engineer works on boats such as yachts, commercial craft and superyachts. In this role, you’ll install, maintain, fault find and repair marine engines, ancillary systems and equipment. You’ll also design and produce solutions to meet boat layouts, restrictions and engineering requirements, or produce boat engineering systems from engineering and technical drawings to specifications. You’ll work to fine tolerances using a variety of measuring equipment, machines and tools. You’ll manufacture, assemble, strip, repair and re-build components. You’ll develop into a good communicator and problem-solver, capable of commissioning and testing boat systems, and being responsible for the quality and accuracy of your work. You’ll also often attend sea trials.

 

Duration: 48 months

Relevant school subjects: Science and DT

Entry requirements: GCSEs in maths, English, a science and a technology

Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to A-levels

Potential salary upon completion: £30,000 per annum
