Construct boats such as yachts, workboats and superyachts

A boatbuilder constructs yachts, workboats and superyachts and refits and repairs existing boats. During the boatbuilder apprenticeship, you’ll train to work with and understand the capabilities of a variety of materials, with boats consisting of composites, metals or wood. You’ll learn to read and interpret engineering and technical drawings to produce moulds, jigs, plugs and templates to create complex shapes using a variety of measuring equipment, machines and hand tools. You’ll also learn to manufacture and assemble components that form the structure of a boat, as well as the interior and exterior fit out. You’ll be expected to work both individually and as part of a team. Boatbuilders typically work with associated trades such as marine engineers and have a strong understanding of the marine industry, staying up to date with industry trends and techniques.

Entry requirements for the boatbuilder apprenticeship: GCSEs, including maths, English and a relevant science

Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to A levels

Potential salary upon completion: £28,000 per annum
