Middlesbrough College partnership helps young engineers kick-start their careers at HC Controls.
Three former apprentices have started full-time jobs at a Teesside manufacturing company after completing their courses with Middlesbrough College Group.
Xander Brown, Fynn Walker, and Tom Spencer are now working as panel wiremen at HC Controls in Stockton. The company designs and builds control panels for clients in the petrochemical and food sectors.
From college placement to full-time jobs
The three students began their journey with 45-day placements at HC Controls during their Engineering T-levels at Middlesbrough College. Their performance impressed the company so much that they were each offered apprenticeships.
The apprenticeships were delivered in partnership with Northern Skills, part of Middlesbrough College Group, combining classroom learning with hands-on work experience.
After 45 months of training, all three successfully completed their Level 3 Engineering Fitter Standard apprenticeships – each earning a Distinction in their final assessments.
Company praises the new recruits
Helen Bullivant, director at HC Controls, praised the trio for their commitment and enthusiasm.
“They were all really keen to learn and got involved straight away. They fit in really well with the rest of the team,” said Helen. “Apprenticeships are a great way for us to train people and help them grow the skills we need.”
HC Controls has a strong history of supporting apprenticeships and is continuing to invest in young talent, with two more apprentices currently in training and plans to recruit another in September.
Apprentices share their experiences
Xander, from Stockton, said the placement helped him discover a new career path.
“I’d originally planned to go into mechanical engineering, but when I started here, I found the work really interesting. I enjoy how every day is different and the projects are all unique.”
Fynn, from Guisborough, said: “I’ve had a lot of support from the College and from Northern Skills throughout. My assessor, Chris, was always there to help if I had questions.”
Tom, from Billingham, added: “There’s a great atmosphere at HC Controls. Everyone gets along, and the College support made a big difference.”
College celebrates success
Dawn Smith, Skills Development Manager at Northern Skills, said: “It’s great to see Xander, Fynn, and Tom doing so well. We’ve seen them progress from T-levels all the way into full-time roles, and it’s a brilliant example of what apprenticeships can offer.”
HC Controls is based on Portrack Interchange Business Park and is preparing to celebrate its 40th anniversary next year. The company currently employs 24 staff and sees apprenticeships as a key part of its long-term success.
Helen Bullivant added: “You need to invest in apprenticeships, but it pays off. We now have three young, skilled people in the workshop who bring energy and new ideas.”
