Maintain and repair equipment used to supply clean water and treat wastewater
Working in the water industry, you’ll help keep essential equipment and systems operating safely and efficiently. Water industry asset maintenance technicians usually work for water companies or specialist contractors, supporting the supply of clean drinking water and the treatment of wastewater. During the water industry asset maintenance technician apprenticeship, you’ll learn how to install, maintain, repair and test plant and equipment used in water treatment, wastewater recycling, pumping stations and wider water networks. Depending on your role, you may focus on mechanical systems, electrical systems, or instrumentation, control and automation. In your day-to-day work, you could inspect equipment, diagnose faults, carry out planned maintenance, respond to breakdowns, replace parts, test systems and make sure equipment is safe before it is brought back into service. You’ll need to follow strict safety procedures, understand how your work affects water quality and the environment, and be confident working across different sites. This role suits someone who enjoys practical problem solving, engineering, technology and working in an industry that provides an essential public service.
