Christian Silva is an apprentice building surveyor with Hampton Court Palace, an apprenticeship he found through Historic Royal Palaces.
What do you do in your role as an apprentice at HRP?
I work as a building surveyor apprentice at Historic Royal Palaces, within the maintenance and facilities department at Hampton Court Palace. My role involves assessing and managing the maintenance, repair, and conservation of the palace’s historic fabric. This includes conducting surveys, assisting with refurbishment projects, and ensuring that the building’s condition is preserved while maintaining its historical integrity. I also work closely with other departments to coordinate and manage any necessary repairs or conservation work.
What valuable experiences have you had so far in your apprenticeship at HRP?
In addition to working at Hampton Court, which has been a privilege—especially having the chance to explore various parts of the palace—I’ve had the opportunity to visit both Kensington Palace and Kew. This has given me insight into how different HRP sites operate. Meeting a diverse range of people who are involved in maintaining the palaces has been incredibly eye-opening. I’ve learned about the various departments that contribute to the upkeep and preservation of these historic sites, which has increased my confidence and broadened my understanding of how such significant buildings function.
What is something you’ve worked on in your role that you’re particularly proud of?
I’m particularly proud of my involvement in the ongoing redecoration and repair of the Tiltyard Café at Hampton Court Palace. Taking the lead on this project—my first major task—has been both daunting and rewarding. It’s provided me with invaluable, hands-on experience in managing a refurbishment project, and I’m excited to apply the skills I’ve learned to further my progress in the apprenticeship.
