“It’s boosted my confidence”
My name is Izzy, and I’m an apprentice civil engineering technician in the road markings and stud asset team.
What made you decide to do an apprenticeship with National Highways?
I was at a crossroads, and the job description excited me. I liked National Highways’ ethos of Home, Safe and Well.
What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?
I love the balance of learning while working. A day at college each week helps me build knowledge beyond my current role.
What does your typical day look like?
I usually start with a team catch-up, then check our team tracker for road marking schemes. I then work on PowerPoints, estimates, and technical drawings.
What’s been your favourite part of the apprenticeship?
Working on technical drawings for Dover Port was a huge challenge but completing them gave me a strong sense of accomplishment.
What have you learned about yourself?
I’ve learned to trust my abilities. I’ve gained confidence in presenting schemes, estimating projects, and offering feedback.
What has made you most proud?
Being nominated for Apprentice of the Year. Even though I didn’t win, being considered was a proud moment.
What’s the most surprising skill you’ve learned?
Presenting! I never thought I could, but I’ve given multiple presentations, which has boosted my confidence.
What advice would you give someone interested in an apprenticeship with National Highways?
Go for it! Apprenticeships let you earn and learn, gain qualifications, and work with great teams.
What are your career aspirations?
I aim to complete a HNC in civil engineering and become a fully qualified civil engineer.
