My name is Katir, and I’m a quantity surveying degree apprentice working in the commercial team on the A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet project.

What made you decide to do an apprenticeship with National Highways?

The chance to earn and learn was key, but National Highways’ values and vision, which align with mine, set the stage for a successful career.

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?

I love the hands-on approach and learning from experienced professionals. It’s an invaluable opportunity that I might have missed if I had gone to university.

What does a typical day look like?

There isn’t a typical day! From meetings over coffee to site visits, the variety of opportunities is what makes the apprenticeship so exciting.

What have you learned about yourself?

I’ve discovered my passion for raising awareness of apprenticeships to students. University isn’t for everyone, and I enjoy sharing my experience.

What do you wish you had known before starting?

The importance of embracing change. Being adaptable and optimistic is key to navigating an apprenticeship’s varied experiences.

What has made you most proud?

Winning the Rising Star award and the CEO Challenge with my team. The recognition shows I have great potential for future success.

What skill have you gained that you now rely on?

Time management. It’s essential for balancing work tasks and my studies.

What advice would you give someone interested in an apprenticeship at National Highways?

What are your career aspirations?

I hope to earn my RICS chartership and possibly work abroad as a quantity surveyor. For now, I’m enjoying my time at National Highways.
