Why “the deep end is the best place to learn”
Hi, I’m Miles, a project manager apprentice at National Highways. I’m currently working on the M42 J6 project.
What made you decide to do an apprenticeship with National Highways?
National Highways offered a diverse range of opportunities to learn from experts, which appealed to me.
What do you like most about your apprenticeship?
I enjoy the balance of working towards a qualification while gaining hands-on experience. The skills and qualifications will both benefit my future.
What’s been your favourite part so far?
Working with my team and learning from professionals. I’ve also loved the volunteering opportunities.
What have you learned about yourself on this journey?
I’ve realised I’m capable of more than I thought. The experience has shown me that sometimes the deep end is the best place to learn!
What do you wish you had known before starting?
I wish I had discovered this opportunity sooner!
What skill have you gained that you now rely on?
Perseverance! I’ve learned that even the most difficult tasks can be completed.
How do you balance studying and working?
I have one study day a week, which I can prepare for. The connection between coursework and real projects helps to accelerate my learning.
What advice would you give someone interested in an apprenticeship at National Highways?
Go for it! It’s great for development and offers a long-term career. In the future, I aim to become an assistant project manager and eventually a project manager.
