“I can genuinely say I enjoy what I do!”
Darcey Warren, 19 years old, is a communication and youth engagement apprentice at the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon & Somerset. She tells the Apprenticeship Guide about her PRCA apprenticeship experience:
“After realising university was not the right path for me, I pursed an apprenticeship communications and PR.
I originally applied to university when I was 17 to study psychology. I did not find sixth form the easiest and I feel like when I was struggling, there was even more pressure on my shoulders to get into university. But once I did my research of what apprenticeships are really like, I realised how they really are the best of both worlds, offering the balance of work and study.
Working on the job four days a week, and studying one, I am constantly learning and gaining new skill sets to equip me for my career. I also get the chance to work with inspiring professionals. The support, work and passion are unmatched, and I can genuinely say I enjoy what I do.
The opportunities, experiences, and people I work with help me develop not only professionally but personally. I have gained confidence to speak up and contribute my ideas, meet new people, and improve skills such as writing, networking, social media, and communication. Regular meetings with my line manager and mentor help me feel supported, both in work and in my apprenticeship.
My apprenticeship finishes next year, and I am so excited to see what the future holds, and until then and beyond that there is still so much learning and growing to do in this field.”
