“I can genuinely say I enjoy what I do!”
Luke Fisher is a public relations executive apprentice with FAUN Zoeller (FZUK). He tells the Apprenticeship Guide about his experience:
“During my A-levels, my school pushed pupils to attend university. While I always knew that it wasn’t for me, I was unsure what I would do.
I was always good at English, so I had a small idea of looking into a career in media. Apprenticeships were often pushed aside, only indulged if you wanted to pursue a career in finance, construction or the motor industry. I never even knew a public relations and communications course even existed. Nevertheless, I started looking every day on the government apprenticeship website, determined for a media role. After countless hours, here I am today, midway through my apprenticeship and overjoyed with this opportunity I have been given.
When I joined the PR industry, I was nervous as I was unsure as to what to expect and it can be daunting meeting new people and being in an unfamiliar environment. However, none of this mattered. Straight away I was made to feel comfortable and supported by the PRCA due to being assigned a mentor. We have regular check-ins to discuss how I am getting on with work, but also life in general, which is extremely important to me.
The best part of being an apprentice for me is the variety of people I have networked with. I especially enjoy the face-to-face training in London, where I meet other apprentices that are further into their qualification, and I can gain insight into what the future might bring for me.
From a work point of view, I have gained much more confidence after travelling to events in Germany and Scotland, which I never thought I would experience!
Most importantly, I am constantly learning and developing, taking part in the important roles of everyday PR such as, writing articles and social media management.
Therefore, I would recommend this apprenticeship to all not knowing what they want to do and those that relish the chance to be innovative as it has been detrimental for me and for sure many others I have met over the last few months.”
