Charlie Hewitt was employed by Clyde & Co as part of a large intake taken on to follow the level 3 advanced apprenticeship in legal services (the forerunner to the paralegal apprenticeship). When he completed that after two years, he progressed to the CILEx level 6 Chartered Legal Executive apprenticeship
Charlie works in the firm’s motor insurance department where he deals with disputed (or litigated) insurance claims. He said: “During the second year of my level 3 advanced apprenticeship in legal services, I was given the responsibility of handling an active caseload of litigated claims. This gave me extensive experience of all aspects of the litigation process, from when cases are opened to when a decision is reached in court. I currently oversee some of the team’s highest value and most complex cases, on account of my progression during the apprenticeship.”
“I complete my own investigations and assessments, using relevant legal resources, before preparing reports and suggesting strategies. These documents need to be drafted precisely and accurately, so I need to have a very good understanding of all aspects of litigation—including potential costs.”
“Since starting my apprenticeship, I have significantly developed my knowledge of the legal sector with specific focus on insurance claims, in addition to the practical skills required to thrive in my role. I have the utmost confidence in my ability to forensically analyse a legal problem, before devising solutions and advising clients in the most efficient and effective way.”
“I feel extremely privileged to be offered the opportunity of an apprenticeship with Clyde & Co and now want to give something back by acting as an ambassador for the legal apprentice scheme.”
