RAF: Air and space operations

Steve is an air and space operations specialist (flight operations) for the RAF

“I joined the RAF in May 2017 as an air and space operations specialist (flight operations) and currently work in the air traffic control tower at the RAF College at Cranwell. I work alongside the air operations controllers, with responsibilities including keeping track of all air systems flying in the visual circuit, while making sure that flight safety is being obeyed. I feel I make a huge tangible difference to the day-to-day operations at the station.”

“I have recently completed the level 3 aviation operations on the ground apprenticeship. This allowed me to gain a recognised qualification from my everyday job, as well as earning while learning and gaining valuable life experience. The apprenticeship has opened many opportunities. What I have learnt in a short space of time has given me the foundation to further progress my career. I am now training the new recruits in air traffic control, and I am able to pass on my expertise.”
