Plan, manage, deliver and review the training of animals

An animal trainer uses positive, reward-based training methods and practices. This includes training the animal to undertake specific tasks, or more general training. During your animal trainer apprenticeship, you’ll learn how to interact with animals, develop training plans to reinforce desirable behaviour and reduce undesirable ones, and review and evaluate training to ensure goals are met and plans continue to be appropriate. You’ll likely work irregular hours and in all weather conditions on this apprenticeship. You’ll need a professional approach to showing compassion, respect, patience and tolerance in all situations to both people and animals. As an animal trainer apprentice, you’ll likely work in one of the following areas: zoo and safari parks, disability services, commercial training, audio-visual industry, animal obedience or animal behaviour.

Duration: 18 months

Entry requirements: For an animal trainer apprenticeship you’ll need prior experience of working with animals

Achievement upon completion: Level 4 (Higher)—equivalent to a foundation degree and above

Potential salary upon completion: £20,000 per annum
