Ecologist apprenticeship

Carry out significant field-based investigations and interpret data generated by fieldwork

Ecology covers all of the relationships between plants, animals, people, and their environment, and the balances between these relationships. The ecologist apprenticeship is a highly scientific and technical role, so you’ll learn to carry out significant field-based investigations and interpret data generated by fieldwork. You’ll analyse, interpret and evaluate relevant scientific information, concepts and ideas, and then use these to develop surveys and investigations, implement them, write reports and propose solutions to problems. Ecologists are employed as consultants, scientists or within policy. During the ecologist apprenticeship you’ll learn to work both autonomously and as part of a wider team, taking responsibility for the quality of your work, to deliver scientific value to your organisation. On completion, you’ll earn a master’s degree in an ecological discipline relevant to your job role, such as ecology, environmental conservation or conservation biology.

Duration: 36 months

Relevant school subjects: Science and maths

Entry requirements for an ecologist apprenticeship: An upper 2nd class degree or significant prior experience

Achievement upon completion: Level 7 (Degree)—equivalent to a master’s degree

Potential salary upon completion: £27,000 per annum
