Carry out specific environmental and conservation tasks

Countryside workers are the custodians of our rural outdoor scenery, so you’ll help to conserve the environment that makes the English countryside both distinctive and special. During the countryside worker apprenticeship you’ll take care of our protected landscapes, such as national parks, areas of outstanding natural beauty and national nature reserves, as well as private estates, country and urban parks, therefore you can expect to be mainly working outside in all weather conditions. Typical job titles include estate worker, access ranger, maintenance ranger, site warden, assistant ranger and field operative. Duties you’ll learn during the countryside worker apprenticeship will include building and repairing fences, walls and hedging, maintaining paths, improving habitats and woodland and monitoring habitats and flora and fauna. You will have a good knowledge of conservation and ecology.

Duration: 12 months

Relevant school subjects: PE, geography and science

Entry requirements: Depend on employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience for a countryside worker apprenticeship

Achievement upon completion: Level 2 (Intermediate) – equivalent to GCSEs

Potential salary upon completion: £21,000
