Install, exchange and maintain smart meters
Dual fuel smart meter installation forms a key part of the government mandate to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy management. During the dual fuel smart meter installer apprenticeship, you’ll work toward responsibility for the safe installation, exchange, commission, decommission and ongoing maintenance of smart metering systems and associated equipment and communication systems. This includes the explanation of how these work and giving up-to-date energy efficiency advice to the customer. The dual fuel smart meter installer role is physical in nature, and may involve lifting and moving of equipment, and working at height and in confined spaces. In this role, you’ll carry out a high level of safety-critical activities while working in customer properties. In achieving a pass in this apprenticeship, you’ll be eligible to apply for membership with the Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Relevant school subjects: Science
Entry requirements for the dual fuel smart meter installer apprenticeship: Two to four GCSEs, including maths and English, or equivalent qualifications, as well as a recognised background check
Achievement upon completion: Level 2 (Intermediate)—equivalent to GCSEs
Potential salary upon completion: £28,000 per annum
