A geospatial survey technician collects data relating to geographic positions on the earth’s surface for use in the creation of maps, satellite navigation systems (satnavs), global positioning systems (GPS), the construction of infrastructure, and a range of other purposes. During the geospatial survey technician apprenticeship, you’ll learn to use technologies and electronic data capture tools and processes to capture geospatial information. You’ll work in either the public or private sector, for an employer such as a geophysical consultant, civil engineering contractor or the military. Geospatial survey technicians work with scientists, technologists and other related and land-related professionals. This apprenticeship will allow you to become an associate member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors or an associate member of the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors. Typical job titles might also include digital technician, drone operator, land surveyer or site engineer.

Duration: 24 months

Relevant school subjects: Geography, ICT and science

Entry requirements for the geospatial survey technician apprenticeship: Five GCSEs, including maths and English, or a level 2 apprenticeship in a relevant discipline

Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to A-levels

Potential salary upon completion: £23,000 per annum
