Preserve and restore historic vehicles and machinery

The range of heritage sectors you could work in includes veteran, vintage, and classic; agricultural and engineering, aviation, bus and coach, commercial vehicle, marine, military vehicles, motorcycles and steam, working for manufacturers, museums or smaller operators. During the heritage engineering technician apprenticeship, you’ll research the artefact to find out as much as possible about its history to ensure accurate restoration. You’ll survey the artefact and classify damage or deterioration, and then strip it down for further evaluation and to decide on a solution. You’ll develop novel ways around complex engineering issues, and carry out forensic work, routinely requiring reverse engineering techniques to be employed in order to understand the reasons and methods used by the original designers and manufacturers, to develop robust, credible and safe repair schemes.

Relevant school subjects: History and science

Entry requirements for the heritage engineering technician apprenticeship: Depend on employer, but GCSEs are likely. Alternatively, relevant experience would be advantageous

Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to A-levels

Potential salary upon completion: £24,000 per annum
