Enable people to live and work in safe, healthy environment
As an environmental health practitioner, most likely for a local authority, you’ll work in a range of settings, from residential situations to highly dangerous conditions, mainly in commercial and industrial settings. You’ll provide expert, professional and technical advice on environmental issues to other local authority departments, external organisations, members of the public and businesses. You’ll attend council committees, courts of law, tribunals and public meetings, all related to the prime objectives of your role, which is to promote a safe and healthy environment for the public and businesses, through education and enforcement. You’ll act as an adviser, educator, consultant and enforcement officer, enabling people to live and work in safe, healthy environments. Examples of the situations that you’ll face include inspecting food premises and workplaces for food safety and health and safety compliance, monitoring air quality, investigating food fraud, and dealing with rogue landlords. On completion of the environmental health practitioner apprenticeship, you’ll earn a bachelor’s degree in environmental health or science.
