Care for the feet of a variety of horses
During the farrier apprenticeship, you’ll develop the skills required to care for the feet of a range of horses, from those belonging to individuals who ride for pleasure, to elite competition horses. You’ll learn how to assess horses and how they move. You’ll become responsible for the quality and accuracy of your own work, develop the communication skills necessary to discuss the condition of horses and their hooves with owners and other professionals, including vets, and move into a position to be able to give advice on various horse welfare options, from a trim for a horse at pasture through to basic remedial work on lame animals. Farriery is a regulated profession and all farriers are required to pass the DipWCF examination before they may legally practise. Once qualified with your farrier apprenticeship, you can work on your own or join a farriery practice to work as part of a team.
