A highway electrical maintenance and installation operative is a multi-skilled professional who is able to carry out both the installation of equipment, such as street lighting columns and traffic signal poles, and the maintenance of that equipment, including correcting faults when equipment is non-operational and changing lamps upon or close to failure. There are many sub-sectors within this area, including street lighting, traffic signals, safety cameras and highway communications, and each uses different equipment and processes, so you’ll choose one of these depending on the specialism of your employer. During the highway electrical maintenance and installation operative apprenticeship, you’ll learn to install and maintain highway electrical support structures, equipment and systems. This could include excavating and installing streetlight posts in the ground.

Duration: 24 months

Entry requirements for the highway electrical maintenance and installation operative apprenticeship: English and maths at level 1

Achievement upon completion: Level 2 (Intermediate)—equivalent to GCSEs

Potential salary upon completion: £25,000 per annum
