High speed rail is a specialist area of work, involving civil engineers, higher technicians in track, power and infrastructure, and operations managers. The technician provides technical solutions across the construction, maintenance and operation of a high speed railway. During the high speed rail and infrastructure technician apprenticeship, you’ll develop the skills and knowledge necessary to be responsible for the safe design, construction, installation, maintenance and operation of a high speed railway that provides a safe and reliable service for its customers. You’ll develop skills and knowledge relating to both high speed and conventional rail networks and infrastructure in order to manage the interface between the systems.

Duration: 36 months

Relevant school subjects: Science

Entry requirements for the high speed rail and infrastructure technician apprenticeship: A-levels, including maths or physics, or a BTEC

Achievement upon completion: Level 4 (Higher)—equivalent to a foundation degree

Potential salary upon completion: £29,000 per annum
