Lay mastic asphalt on to a wide range of surfaces and structures
Laying mastic asphalt is a skilled handcraft that requires perfecting a range of techniques to apply asphalt to a variety of surfaces, creating a waterproof, seamless and smooth finish. This unique material is applied in molten form and needs to be correctly heated and agitated before application, so during the mastic asphalter apprenticeship you’ll learn the skills and knowledge to be able to select the correct tools and resources for use, and prepare surfaces for application. Your work environment is wherever the mastic asphalt is due to be laid, such as roofs, balconies, basements, car parks, paving and bridges, and flooring, all ranging in size. You’ll mainly be working outside and often exposed to the elements. Your main responsibilities will be to ensure all materials, tools and facilities are correct, and to maintain health, safety and welfare requirements at all times, with an awareness of your working environment.
