Stonemason apprenticeship

Install or conserve stone in buildings or landscape projects

Stonemasonry is a construction specialism and can be integral to both private and commercial projects. You’ll work on projects where stonework is a key feature within a garden, including steps, walls, copings, water features, bespoke stone features and paved areas. During the stonemason apprenticeship you will complete one of these occupational options: Banker mason—based in workshops producing finished stone components. Interior stone fixer—install stone components inside a building, including flooring and walling. Exterior stone fixer—install solid masonry and stone cladding to the outside of structures. Memorial masons—produce, install and repair memorial stonework. Stone façade preservationist—assess and clean stone building façades using chemical and non-chemical methods. Heritage stonemason—conserve, repair or replace stone in historic buildings. Stonemason—carry out skilled work using quarried or mined natural stone. Overall, you’ll be responsible for carrying out specialist, skilled work following drawings, designs and specifications.

 

Duration: 24 months

Relevant school subjects: DT

Entry requirements for the stonemason apprenticeship: Depend on employer, but relevant experience would be advantageous

Achievement upon completion: Level 2 (Intermediate)—equivalent to GCSEs

Potential salary upon completion: £23,000
