Manage the signals and electrical controls needed to keep trains running safely and on time

A rail infrastructure operator supports and regulates the safe operation of the rail network through the use of signalling control systems, electrical control systems, and responding to incidents, where the operational integrity of the UK rail transport network is affected. As an operator in one of these roles, you’ll work closely with controllers, train drivers, maintenance staff, power companies and specialists in order to respond effectively to incidents. The core content of this apprenticeship covers safety, quality and customer service. You’ll then follow one of the specialist options in signal operation, electrical controller or incident response, depending on your employer. Successful completion of the rail infrastructure operator apprenticeship provides eligibility for membership with the Institution of Railway Operators.

Duration: 12 months

Entry requirements for the rail infrastructure operator apprenticeship: Depend on employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent

Achievement upon completion: Level 2 (Intermediate)—equivalent to GCSEs

Potential salary upon completion: £23,000 per annum
