Make and repair upholstered furniture

This advanced upholsterer apprenticeship is found in the furniture, furnishings and interiors industry, however it can also relate to the automotive and marine industry where they have upholstered items such as seating. You’ll specialise in either traditional or modern upholstery and your main purpose will be to produce upholstered furniture by preparing and cutting fabrics, creating and repairing frames and joints, selecting and applying suspensions and upholstering frames. As an apprentice upholsterer you will be a skilled and methodical individual, capable of creating ergonomic and comfortable furniture using traditional or modern techniques, materials and fabrics to produce aesthetically pleasing and consumer products fit for purpose. You will interact with a range of people, including production and manufacturing managers, quality technicians, production leaders, designers and product developers. You will work alone or within small teams with other upholsterers and you will be responsible for liaising with colleagues, suppliers and customers. Your work could take place in small craft workshops or in larger factories.

 

Duration: 24 months

Relevant school subjects: DT, art

Entry requirements for the upholsterer apprenticeship: Depend on employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience

Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to A-levels

Potential salary upon completion: £23,000
