Carry out reactive and routine maintenance on equipment to ensure safety and efficiency

A utilities engineering technician performs reactive and routine maintenance on equipment to ensure that water sites run safely and efficiently. The utilities engineering technician apprenticeship covers three roles—electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation control and automation—so you’ll undertake the specific requirements of your employer, along with the core skills and knowledge. Generally, you’ll learn how to carry out inspections, and monitor and repair a range of waste and water systems and equipment. Depending on the role, you’ll find yourself interpreting electrical drawings to install, position or re-locate electrical equipment and cabling; installing and maintaining mechanical components, including motors, pumps and gearboxes; or inspecting and maintaining security equipment, telecommunication devices and alarm systems—along with a range of other tasks particular to the specialist role.

Relevant school subjects: Science, engineering

Entry requirements for the utilities engineering technician apprenticeship: Three to five GCSEs, including maths and English, or equivalent qualifications. For electrical and instrumentation control and automation roles, one GCSE in maths is desirable

Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to A-levels

Potential salary upon completion: £25,000 per annum
