A water environment worker enables the public to enjoy rivers, coasts, lakes, wetlands, canals and reservoirs and the surrounding land and buildings, while creating habitats for species to thrive. This includes minimising flood and environmental incidents by utilising assets to manage water levels and using techniques to mitigate the impact of pollution, particularly in natural habitats. During the water environment worker apprenticeship, you could be employed in a number of capacities, including managing assets and responding to major incidents, and water level management, flood risk and drainage. Core duties will include maintaining, repairing and carrying out minor works; responding to events such as floods; and creating, maintaining and improving habitats to ensure a natural healthy environment. Where required, you’ll be responsible for any plant and equipment supplied to carry out your duties. While part of a team, you may be working alone in the field, and will be required to carry out duties in a safe manner.

Duration: 18 months

Entry requirements for the water environment worker apprenticeship: Depend on employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience

Achievement upon completion: Level 3 (Advanced)—equivalent to GCSEs

Potential salary upon completion: £23,000
