Carry out operations in a clean water or waste water treatment facility to ensure water safety

Water treatment operatives work for clean water or waste water treatment companies regulated by OFWAT (Office of Water Services). You’ll typically work in only one type of water treatment, carrying out operations to ensure water safety. During the water process operative apprenticeship, you’ll take, monitor, record and interpret water samples to ensure treatment processes are working effectively. Duties will include site checks for safety, security and productivity purposes, reporting any faults, issues or concerns that need escalation. In waste water you’ll focus on the safe discharge of the water and in clean water for maintaining water quality and hygiene standards. Much of your time will be spent at a water treatment works and you’ll be responsible for completing work to the required standard, ensuring that health and safety and regulatory compliance are met at all times, as failure to do so could have serious consequences for yourself, public health and the environment.

Duration: 18 months

Entry requirements for the water process operative apprenticeship: Depend on employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience

Achievement upon completion: Level 2 (Intermediate)—equivalent to GCSEs

Potential salary upon completion: £23,000
