I previously studied Architecture for 3 years at University before realising it wasn’t something I wanted to pursue. I found that I had more interest in being involved with the construction of the project, still maintaining the design and management attributes that Civil Engineers have. I had the opportunity after applying to join the Bam Technical Apprenticeship and started my studies.
The main reason I choose the apprenticeship route was that it’s the perfect blend of challenge and guidance, It enables you to immediately apply what you learn. I believe that the apprenticeship route is the best and most efficient path to launching a successful career alongside advantages like building professional networks and gaining industry recognised credentials in the process.
I am currently working on a major railway project that is going to connect large parts of the country, my role includes site work where I am responsible for helping out setting out reinforced pre cast and in-situ concrete structures and large concrete pour operations but also office work that includes document control and creating drawings on CAD Software.
The best part of my job is the relationships you build within the site team but also how no day is the same due to being on such a fast paced project. If you are someone who enjoys consistently challenging yourself and pushing the boundaries on what you think are possible then I strongly advise you to apply for an apprenticeship in Civil engineering.
During my first year of being an apprentice I have been fortunate enough to be shortlisted for the ICE QUEST Scholarship which I’m fuelled more than ever to receive next year. I have also been given the opportunity to get involved in engagement groups within Bam, this is all while studying towards my Level 4 and EngTech Status with the ICE.
