I studied at Leeds College of Building and achieved my Level 4 HNC (Higher National Certificate) in 2024. I am currently undertaking my degree (BEng – Building Services Design Engineering) at Leeds Beckett University on a day-release basis. This is due to conclude in 2028. Of course, all of my education has been funded by BAM which is brilliant.
I attended a Grammar School which pushed the mindset that ‘if you don’t go to University, you have failed’ I completely disagree with this and would argue that degree apprenticeships open far more opportunities in industries than full time degrees. The main benefit being, that along with my education, I am gathering on-the-job experience working with professionals and specialists who have been in the industry decades. I would say that you can’t put a price on that.
BAM are a household name in the Construction Industry, both in the UK and further afield. The company is thriving with dedicated people who can provide the knowledge and skills to give me a successful career. Before I joined, I knew that BAM built the First Direct Arena in Leeds. I had attended many a gig there and never failed to be in awe of the scale of the place. I thought it impossible that I could ever comprehend how a building like this was constructed and how the systems within it work, but 4 years down the line, I can confidently explain how buildings like this are powered, ventilated cooled and maintained. BAM have put me through a rotation style experience where I have been exposed to a range of departments, allowing me to make my own decision on which direction I go. I have been very fortunate to have had such a dedicated and invested mentor.
In my short career, I have been involved in a variety of different projects. I worked on the pre-construction on jobs such as Schools and Hospitals- More specifically the Pathology Facility at St James Hospital in Leeds. I worked on the construction phase of the Daphne Steele Building
for the University of Huddersfield. I have also worked on refurb projects, in particular Wharfdale Hospital Theatres and a large scheme at Harrogate Convention Centre. As I write this, I am based at Manchester Airport as we are carrying out work at Terminal 2.
In 2023, I was nominated by my Line Manager for an award at the ‘Building the Future Awards’ where the ceremony was held at Villa Park. In 2024, I won the Level 4 Apprentice of the Year Award for Leeds College of Building. I have gained my EngTech and are a licentiate member of CIBSE. (Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers)
