I chose an apprenticeship because it offered the perfect balance between practical experience and classroom-based learning. Transitioning from school into full-time work was daunting, but the apprenticeship route made that manageable. Being able to learn theory, then apply it on site helped me understand concepts more clearly. It wasn’t just about ticking boxes, I could actually see how things worked in real-life scenarios.
Working at BAM has been positive. From day one, I’ve felt supported and valued as an apprentice. The company invests in its people, there’s a strong focus on training, mentoring, and personal development. I’ve had the chance to work alongside team-members who are always willing to share their knowledge and take time to explain things. The culture is one of
respect, where everyone is encouraged to contribute, ask questions, and learn. That sense of unity and shared purpose making the difference.
One of the most rewarding aspects is witnessing a project evolution. Watching construction sites transform from an empty plot into a completed building is incredibly satisfying. Each stage of the process brings something new, and it’s a reminder of the impact our work has. Knowing that I’ve played a part gives me a sense of pride. It’s not just about the final result, it’s about being part of a team that brings results to life.
Thinking about a career or apprenticeship in construction, my advice is simple: try everything. Don’t be afraid to step out and take on something different, even if it’s challenging. Not everything will be the perfect fit, and that’s okay, every experience teaches you something. The skills you pick up, even from the parts that don’t work out, can still be applied in different ways throughout your career. Being curious will give you a better understanding, helping you find the right path.
