University of Sheffield - Speech and Language Therapy - Sam Thinneson

Employer: Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust

Degree: level 6 Speech and Language Therapy apprenticeship

Why did you decide to apply for this apprenticeship?

I applied for the apprenticeship programme because I felt ready to further pursue my career within speech and language therapy. I had worked for the NHS for over 22 years prior to starting the apprenticeship, and the skills gained over these years helped me understand the qualities needed to become an NHS worker.

What are the biggest benefits of an apprenticeship?

As a mature student having financial responsibilities has always been a barrier to continuing further education. The apprenticeship route offers the safety net and once completed, guarantees a qualified position. In addition I get to continue to work and grow within an amazing, supportive team, with the added benefit of frequent tripartite meetings and one-to-ones with university and practice mentors.

What is one of the most rewarding aspects of being an apprentice?

The most rewarding aspect of being an apprentice is being provided with the academic tools and knowledge to help people with speech and swallowing difficulties. The care, support and advice that I have been able to offer has been invaluable to the quality of people’s lives. Making a difference to someone’s quality of life and overall patient experience means a lot to me.

How is this apprenticeship helping you to develop?

This apprenticeship has helped me develop academically, professionally and personally. I’ve gained skills in time management, as well as reading and interpreting research. As the programme has progressed I’ve been able to apply my new knowledge and skills, and have been given more responsibility and complex patients to support.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

Go for it! It’s an amazing route to complete a degree in something you love.
