Build systems that collect, manage, and convert data into usable information for colleagues to interpret
As a data engineer apprentice, you’ll develop systems that collect, manager, and convert large data sets into usable information for data scientists and business intelligence analysts to interpret. Data engineers can be found in all kinds of sectors, from government and healthcare to finance, education, and retail. During a data engineer apprenticeship, you’ll ensure that data is accessible and accurate, enabling your organisation to evaluate and optimise their performance. Day-to-day, you’ll build data flows to connect operational systems, integrate data streaming systems, and write scripts for data transformation and loading. A big part of the data engineer role is ensuring clean, regular, and accurate data for effective governance and decision-making. You’ll often work to deadlines and will need to meet certain quality standards, following organisational procedures and policies to ensure security and compliance. This kind of work requires a good eye for detail and strong communication skills to collaborate well with people in other data-centric roles, like data scientists.
