Port operative apprenticeship

Carry out a range of tasks involving handling cargo, passengers or marine craft

During the port operative apprenticeship you’ll play a key role in enabling businesses to deliver on time and safely. Cargo can include any goods imported to, or exported from the UK, such as cars, food, manufactured goods and raw materials and the work they do depends on the type of ship or cargo. Operatives in larger ports tend to specialise, but smaller ports often require them to perform a wide range of duties. Responsibilities you may be involved in could include loading, unloading, handling and securing cargo; directing and moving vehicles; operating lock gate and bridges; and working with heavy machinery. The job is most commonly broken down into cargo and passenger roles. Cargo operatives load and discharge vessels in a wide range of locations, while passenger, ferry and cruise Operatives load and unload passengers, their baggage and vehicles from vessels. You’ll need to have a professional approach, be risk aware and display a proactive approach to your work.

Duration: 12 months

Relevant school subjects: Science, geography

Entry requirements for the port operative apprenticeship: Depend on employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience. Candidates may need to meet certain medical standards of physical health. Possession of a driving licence is likely to be advantageous.

Achievement upon completion: Level 2 (Intermediate)—equivalent to GCSEs

Potential salary upon completion: £25,000 per annum
