From apprentice to preschool leader with Kids Planet

Apprenticeships offer a great way to learn skills while working, and Laura Hall’s journey shows just how valuable they can be. If you’re considering an apprenticeship in early years education, her experience might just inspire you to take the plunge!

From apprentice to preschool leader

Apprenticeships are a great way to get real-world experience while earning a qualification. Laura Hall’s story shows just how life-changing they can be. She recently completed her level 3 early years education apprenticeship at Kids Planet’s Woodside nursery in Bradford, something which she calls “life-changing.”

Learning on the job

At 18, Laura knew she wanted a hands-on way to learn. “I was initially going to apply through college, but the apprenticeship felt like the right fit for me,” explains Laura, “I learn better by doing, and the chance to gain hands-on experience while earning a salary was a huge bonus. It allowed me to start my life and career straight away.”

For three years, Laura worked in the preschool room, learning key skills to help kids become more independent and ready for school. She helped them set the table at mealtimes and put on their coats, teaching them important everyday skills.

“The best thing about an apprenticeship is that you’re learning on the job,” Laura shares, “You’re building connections, gaining practical experience, and getting qualified. It’s both challenging and incredibly rewarding.”

Support and success

Balancing work and study wasn’t always easy. “Balancing studying and working in a busy nursery was a challenge at first. But over time, thanks to my Kids Planet colleagues around me, I learned how to manage my time effectively, and the hands-on experience really helped me stay motivated and focused. I have my team and Kids Planet to thank for my success.”

Now, as a preschool room leader, Laura is looking forward to what’s next. After maternity leave, she plans to take a level 5 qualification in special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). “There’s always more to learn when it comes to SEND,” she says, “and I want to make sure every child gets the tailored support they need to thrive.”

Why pick an apprenticeship?

Laura has simple advice for anyone thinking about an apprenticeship in early years education: “Go for it. You’ll grow in confidence, learn a lot about yourself, and make a real difference in children’s lives.”

Gill Mason, training academy director at Kids Planet, explains why apprenticeships are so valuable. “Apprenticeships offer the perfect mix of practical experience and structured learning. They open doors to progression and specialisation, as Laura’s journey shows. At Kids Planet, we’re proud to provide the training and support that enables our apprentices to succeed.”
