As the countdown to the UK City of Culture 2025 begins, Bradford is gearing up to ensure that the vibrant energy of its young people continues to shape the city’s cultural landscape.
Bradford secured a multi-million pound investment when it was named the UK’s next City of Culture. As well as more than 1,000 new performances, events, and arts festivals, Bradford 2025 has unveiled a new apprenticeship programme that puts young people at the front of development and delivery.
Hands-on experience
Bradford 2025 is introducing six paid apprenticeship roles across various departments. These apprenticeship roles span marketing, digital, producing, and operations. The Bradford 2025 apprenticeships came from a partnership with Access Creative College, the UK’s industry-led creative college. These full-time apprenticeships offer young people hands-on experience, allowing them to contribute to a once-in-a-generation cultural programme right on their doorstep.
Shanaz Gulzar, creative director at Bradford 2025, affirms, “We are creating opportunities for young people throughout our year of culture, and this is one of many.”
The Bradford 2025 apprenticeship roles will be open for applications at the end of January, with additional opportunities slated to be announced throughout 2024.
Young Creatives scheme
The apprenticeships come in addition to the Young Creatives scheme. Thanks to a generous £250,000 grant from the Harry & Mary Foundation, ten young people will have the opportunity to work in Bradford 2025’s producing and engagement departments. This 18-month scheme, paying the Living Wage Foundation rate of £12.00 per hour, aims to provide valuable behind-the-scenes experience in creative programming and event planning. Participants will work towards a level 4 professional diploma in creative enterprise with Bradford School of Art and Bradford College.
